Use of a liquid-crystal, heater-element composite for quantitative, high-resolution heat transfer coefficients on a turbine airfoil, including turbulence and surface roughness effects
Local heat transfer coefficients were measured along the midchord of a three-times-size turbine vane airfoil in a static cascade operated at roon temperature over a range of Reynolds numbers. The test surface consisted of a composite of commercially available materials: a Mylar sheet with a layer of cholestric liquid crystals, which change color with temperature, and a heater made of a polyester sheet coated with vapor-deposited gold, which produces uniform heat flux. After the initial selection and calibration of the composite sheet, accurate, quantitative, and continuous heat transfer coefficients were mapped over the airfoil surface. Tests were conducted at two free-stream turbulence intensities: 0.6 percent, which is typical of wind tunnels; and 10 percent, which is typical of real engine conditions. In addition to a smooth airfoil, the effects of local leading-edge sand roughness were also examined for a value greater than the critical roughness. The local heat transfer coefficients are presented for both free-stream turbulence intensities for inlet Reynolds numbers from 1.20 to 5.55 x 10 to the 5th power. Comparisons are also made with analytical values of heat transfer coefficients obtained from the STAN5 boundary layer code
On the interplay between the loop-tree duality and helicity amplitudes
The spinor-helicity formalism has proven to be very efficient in the
calculation of scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory, while the loop
tree duality (LTD) representation of multi-loop integrals exhibits appealing
and interesting advantages with respect to other approaches. In view of the
most recent developments in LTD, we exploit the synergies with the
spinor-helicity formalism to analyse illustrative one- and two-loop scattering
processes. We focus our discussion on the local UV renormalisation of IR and UV
finite amplitudes and present a fully automated numerical implementation that
provides efficient expressions which are integrable directly in four space-time

Meta-analysis, complexity, and heterogeneity: a qualitative interview study of researchers’ methodological values and practices
Background Complex or heterogeneous data pose challenges for systematic review and meta-analysis. In recent years, a number of new methods have been developed to meet these challenges. This qualitative interview study aimed to understand researchers’ understanding of complexity and heterogeneity and the factors which may influence the choices researchers make in synthesising complex data. Methods We conducted interviews with a purposive sample of researchers (N = 19) working in systematic review or meta-analysis across a range of disciplines. We analysed data thematically using a framework approach. Results Participants reported using a broader range of methods and data types in complex reviews than in traditional reviews. A range of techniques are used to explore heterogeneity, but there is some debate about their validity, particularly when applied post hoc. Conclusions Technical considerations of how to synthesise complex evidence cannot be isolated from questions of the goals and contexts of research. However, decisions about how to analyse data appear to be made in a largely informal way, drawing on tacit expertise, and their relation to these broader questions remains unclear
A novel DNA-binding motif in prostate tumor overexpressed-1 (PTOV1) required for the expression of ALDH1A1 and CCNG2 in cancer cells
PTOV1 is a transcription and translation regulator and a promoter of cancer progression. Its overexpression in prostate cancer induces transcription of drug resistance and self-renewal genes, and docetaxel resistance. Here we studied PTOV1 ability to directly activate the transcription of ALDH1A1 and CCNG2 by binding to specific promoter sequences. Chromatin immunoprecipitation and electrophoretic mobility shift assays identified a DNA-binding motif inside the PTOV-A domain with similarities to known AT-hooks that specifically interacts with ALDH1A1 and CCNG2 promoters. Mutation of this AT-hook-like sequence significantly decreased the expression of ALDH1A1 and CCNG2 promoted by PTOV1. Immunohistochemistry revealed the association of PTOV1 with mitotic chromosomes in high grade prostate, colon, bladder, and breast carcinomas. Overexpression of PTOV1, ALDH1A1, and CCNG2 significantly correlated with poor prognosis in prostate carcinomas and with shorter relapse-free survival in colon carcinoma. The previously described interaction with translation complexes and its direct binding to ALDH1A1 and CCNG2 promoters found here reveal the PTOV1 capacity to modulate the expression of critical genes at multiple levels in aggressive cancers. Remarkably, the AT-hook motifs in PTOV1 open possibilities for selective targeting its nuclear and/or cytoplasmic activities
Open loop amplitudes and causality to all orders and powers from the loop-tree duality
Multiloop scattering amplitudes describing the quantum fluctuations at
high-energy scattering processes are the main bottleneck in perturbative
quantum field theory. The loop-tree duality is a novel method aimed at
overcoming this bottleneck by opening the loop amplitudes into trees and
combining them at integrand level with the real-emission matrix elements. In
this Letter, we generalize the loop-tree duality to all orders in the
perturbative expansion by using the complex Lorentz-covariant prescription of
the original one-loop formulation. We introduce a series of mutiloop topologies
with arbitrary internal configurations and derive very compact and factorizable
expressions of their open-to-trees representation in the loop-tree duality
formalism. Furthermore, these expressions are entirely independent at integrand
level of the initial assignments of momentum flows in the Feynman
representation and remarkably free of noncausal singularities. These
properties, that we conjecture to hold to other topologies at all orders,
provide integrand representations of scattering amplitudes that exhibit
manifest causal singular structures and better numerical stability than in

Direct transformation of crystalline MoO into few-layers MoS
We fabricate large-area atomically thin MoS layers through the direct
transformation of crystalline molybdenum MoS (MoO) by sulfurization at
relatively low temperatures. The obtained MoS2 sheets are polycrystalline
(~10-20 nm single-crystal domain size) with areas of up to 300x300 um with
2-4 layers in thickness and show a marked p-type behaviour. The synthesized
films are characterized by a combination of complementary techniques: Raman
spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and

Specificity of a whole blood IGRA in German nursing students
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Interferon-gamma release assays (IGRA) are used for tuberculosis (TB) screening in healthcare workers (HCWs). However, data on specificity of IGRA in serial testing of HCWs is sparse. Therefore the specificity and the negative predictive value of the IGRA - QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT) - in German nursing students was investigated.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>194 nursing students at the start of their professional career were tested with the QFT. 14 nursing students were excluded from the specificity analysis, due to exposure to mycobacterium tuberculosis. Two of these subjects were QFT- positive. None of them developed disease during the year of follow-up. A study group of 180 students, all with very low risk of prior TB infection, remained in the specificity analysis. Subjects were monitored for at least two years with respect to the development of active TB disease. IGRA was performed at the start of the training and after one year.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The mean age of the study group (n = 180) was 23 years (range 18-53) with 70.9% female and 99.4% German born. The specificity of QFT was 98.9% (178/180; 95% CI 0.96-0.99); lowering the cut-off from 0.35 IU/ml to 0.1 IU/ml would have decreased specificity only slightly to 97.8% (176/180; 95% CI 0.94-0.99). Of the 154 nursing students available for re-testing, one student who initially scored positive reverted to negative, and one student initially negative converted to positive. None of the monitored group with initially negative QFT results developed TB disease, indicating a high negative predictive value of the IGRA in this population.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Following our data, QFT can serve as an effective tool in pre-employment TB screenings for HCWs. As its negative results were stable over time, specificity of the QFT in serial testing of HCWs is high. As the risk of acquiring TB infection in the German healthcare system appears to be low, our data supports the recommendation of performing TB screening only in those HCWs with known contact to TB patients or infectious materials.</p

Genetic association study of QT interval highlights role for calcium signaling pathways in myocardial repolarization.
The QT interval, an electrocardiographic measure reflecting myocardial repolarization, is a heritable trait. QT prolongation is a risk factor for ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death (SCD) and could indicate the presence of the potentially lethal mendelian long-QT syndrome (LQTS). Using a genome-wide association and replication study in up to 100,000 individuals, we identified 35 common variant loci associated with QT interval that collectively explain ∼8-10% of QT-interval variation and highlight the importance of calcium regulation in myocardial repolarization. Rare variant analysis of 6 new QT interval-associated loci in 298 unrelated probands with LQTS identified coding variants not found in controls but of uncertain causality and therefore requiring validation. Several newly identified loci encode proteins that physically interact with other recognized repolarization proteins. Our integration of common variant association, expression and orthogonal protein-protein interaction screens provides new insights into cardiac electrophysiology and identifies new candidate genes for ventricular arrhythmias, LQTS and SCD
European Respiratory Society guidelines for the management of adult bronchiectasis
Bronchiectasis in adults is a chronic disorder associated with poor quality of life and frequent exacerbations in many patients. There have been no previous international guidelines.The European Respiratory Society guidelines for the management of adult bronchiectasis describe the appropriate investigation and treatment strategies determined by a systematic review of the literature.A multidisciplinary group representing respiratory medicine, microbiology, physiotherapy, thoracic surgery, primary care, methodology and patients considered the most relevant clinical questions (for both clinicians and patients) related to management of bronchiectasis. Nine key clinical questions were generated and a systematic review was conducted to identify published systematic reviews, randomised clinical trials and observational studies that answered these questions. We used the GRADE approach to define the quality of the evidence and the level of recommendations. The resulting guideline addresses the investigation of underlying causes of bronchiectasis, treatment of exacerbations, pathogen eradication, long term antibiotic treatment, anti-inflammatories, mucoactive drugs, bronchodilators, surgical treatment and respiratory physiotherapy.These recommendations can be used to benchmark quality of care for people with bronchiectasis across Europe and to improve outcomes
